Myopia can be managed

Commonly known as short-sightedness, myopia can develop at any age. It’s estimated that up to one in three people in the UK are affected by it—a number that increases every year. The earlier it starts, the higher the risk of eye problems.

Our myopia management program provides a non-surgical treatment to correct short-sightedness. A range of convenient solutions are available to fit your lifestyle and safeguard your vision in the long term, such as orthokeratology lenses, orthokeratology glasses, or ortho k contacts.

ORTHO-K: Correct your vision while sleeping

Ortho-K (Orthokeratology) treatment corrects your vision by gently reshaping the cornea with specially designed lenses while you sleep. Shown to reduce the progress of short-sightedness, simply remove the custom contact lens during the day to enjoy clear vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to research, the progression of myopia can be delayed or stopped during childhood. Some of the procedures used to address myopia include orthokeratology (Ortho-K), multifocal glasses, myopia control lenses, contact lenses, and atropine eye drops. We will offer a bespoke myopia treatment plan for your child based on their eye exam, prescription, and needs at the time of assessment. Our flexible plan allows you to move seamlessly between the three treatment options as your child’s needs change. The total initial one-off cost of an Ortho-K fitting or Miyosmart is £280. All future supplies are covered by the £50/month plan. Booking your child’s eye test is the starting point for this treatment.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is the fitting of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses that you wear overnight. While you are asleep, the ortho k contact lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye (cornea) so you can see clearly when you remove the ortho k contacts after you wake up.

Ortho K lenses UK are prescribed for two purposes:

  • To correct refractive errors (primarily short-sightedness, but also astigmatism and hyperopia). In some cases, ortho-k is also used to correct presbyopia
  • To slow the progression of childhood myopia
Ortho K lenses are also called “corneal reshaping contact lenses”, essentially contacts that correct vision overnight. They gently reshape the cornea (the clear dome at the front of the eye) so that you can see clearly during the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses. This provides lifestyle benefits, particularly for active children and adults. The corneal reshaping is reversible. Thus, if you stop wearing the Ortho K lenses, your eye shape and prescription will return to its pre-Ortho-K baseline. It is also an alternative to LASIK or other refractive surgery for adults.

Anyone over 4 years old can wear Ortho-K contact lenses. Ortho-K lenses for kids can effectively slow down, or even stop, their eyes from worsening as they grow up. Reducing a child’s myopia (short-sightedness) progression is highly beneficial for their long-term eye health — lowering the risk of developing glaucoma, retinal detachment, and myopic macular degeneration. Our Ortho-K optometrists assess your suitability for Ortho-K based on the results of your exam.

Ortho-K is the most effective optical treatment for myopia control, and this is backed by numerous international research papers studying the effects of Ortho-K lenses on children’s myopia progression. We can expect Ortho-K treatment to slow a child’s myopia progression by around 50%. Even better results have often been achieved, and some children’s myopia even stops progressing altogether. The earlier an Ortho-K treatment is started, the greater the benefits for your child’s vision.
